#IWill Fund introduces youngsters to music

River Studios is an exciting and vibrant Community Interest Company based in Totton, providing a growing number of not-for-profit, youth-led, socially impactful, music activity projects. It’s aim is to offer free or low cost music lessons and performance skill training to engage disadvantaged youth aged 0 – 25 in the Southampton and surrounding area.

Chris Grayston, River Studios Managing Director says: “It is our objective to answer a real need in the community. Many young people have become, or in danger of becoming NEET, or suffering from high anxiety we have responded to this ever-growing cold spot of unsettled youth by providing activities that embed leadership and progressive habits for life.

“With our exciting music activities, instrument training, singing, production, song-writing and performance skills our projects build confidence – changing behaviours that are helping young people overcome personal challenges and develop self-esteem.”

River Studios was awarded £4,312.00 as part of the #IWill fund – a UK wide programme aiming to make social action a regular part of life for less affluent young people aged 10-20. The programme aims to encourage the younger generation to make a significant contribution to their local communities through volunteering, fundraising and campaigning, while also aiming to build their confidence and skills.

Joy Thorn, Director of Rover Studios said: “The HIWFC grant has helped us offer more children the opportunity to access subsidised or completely free music activities. This includes music production where they can learn the fundamentals of making music in a professional recording studio environment.”

“Music education and becoming part of a musical community has a huge impact on helping remove barriers in young people's lives.”
